I’m Starting a Business

Countdown

Flashback: It’s New Year’s Eve and I’m at my girlfriend’s house. We’re enjoying the company of family around her dinner table and her mom asks, “What is everyone’s New Year’s Resolution?”

Everyone takes a minute to think about it, we go around the table and say the generic, lose weight and eat healthier, do well in school, etc. Then it’s my turn…

In my head I’m thinking, “just say something crazy like start a business”… Instantaneously, “I’m going to start a business”. Deep down I’ve always wanted to try and I knew if I actually said it out loud, I’d feel a sense of validation.

They were polite and went with it, but I could tell they didn’t believe me. I honestly didn’t need their approval in the first place… I just needed my own. I wanted to put the pressure on myself to fulfill what I truly wanted.

Systems Check

For the past 9 months I’ve gone through a few ups and downs, like any one has… In my mid 20’s I’m still learning and growing, which obviously takes time, but I’m impatient. No one has time for that.

By giving myself the goal of starting a business, I believe I’m setting myself up for experiences that only a few people ever get to have (Until I checked). I was hoping there were less small businesses to feed my ego, but there are 27.9 million small businesses according to SBA.gov in the U.S. – I know not all are successful, but that’s quite a few people who have tried.

Regardless, It’s a venture that I can say I’m pursuing.

You’ve Got The Green Light

The other day, I finally filed for my LLC. For some reason it was more difficult to actually go through with it than expected. For starters, picking a name was near impossible and took a long time. I also decided to start this with multiple friends, so of course the name was in constant debate. This first venture with friends will surely be a learning experience.

It will provide a ton of topics to talk about for the rest of the year as we work together. In another post, I’ll start to discuss our business that we’re starting, our goals, how to work out an operating agreement, and the pros and cons of working with friends. – Can’t wait to see what’s in store.
